A perfectly installed epoxy floor with a high-gloss topcoat can hit a dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF) below 0.42 when wet. Below 0.42 is where the American National Standards Institute says pedestrian slip risk becomes significant. A beautiful floor that lands someone in the ER isn’t a beautiful floor — it’s a liability.
Slip resistance isn’t an afterthought. It should be specified before the first primer coat goes down.
How Slip Resistance Is Measured
Two measurements matter:
COF (Coefficient of Friction) is the ratio of horizontal force needed to slide an object across a surface versus the object’s weight. A higher COF means more friction, less slip. Values above 0.60 are generally considered safe for pedestrian use in dry conditions.
DCOF (Dynamic Coefficient of Friction) measures friction while the object is already in motion — the scenario that actually matters when someone’s foot is sliding. ANSI A137.1 and the ANSI/TCNA A326.3 standard both use wet DCOF as the key metric for flooring surfaces.
The 0.42 threshold is the minimum DCOF recommended under the B101.3 standard from ASTM International for level flooring in wet conditions. For ramps, the threshold goes higher.

The Most Common Anti-Slip Additives
Aluminum Oxide
This is the industry workhorse. Aluminum oxide grit — the same material used in sandpaper — is broadcast onto the wet topcoat before it cures. Particle sizes range from 60 grit (coarser, more aggressive) to 220 grit (finer, less texture visible).
According to the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), aluminum oxide applied at manufacturer-recommended rates typically raises wet DCOF from 0.38 to 0.62–0.70. That’s a meaningful jump.
The downside: aluminum oxide changes the surface feel and appearance. It dulls the gloss. For show garages or commercial lobbies where aesthetics matter, it’s not always the preferred option.
Aluminum oxide is the best choice for:
- Commercial kitchens
- Pool surrounds
- Any space where wet boots or bare feet are the norm
- Industrial floors where chemical spills are possible
Polymer Anti-Slip Grit
Clear polymer grit additives are mixed directly into the topcoat rather than broadcast on top. Because the particles are transparent, the gloss and color of the floor are mostly preserved. You get improved grip without the visible texture of aluminum oxide.
Polymer grit is popular in residential garages, lobbies, and showrooms where the aesthetic matters. It typically raises wet DCOF to 0.50–0.60 — better than bare epoxy, but not as aggressive as aluminum oxide.
Silica Sand
The low-cost option. Silica sand broadcast into the topcoat is standard on budget jobs and DIY systems. It works — but it’s inconsistent. Particle distribution is uneven, and the texture can feel rough underfoot rather than pleasantly grippy. It’s a reasonable choice for utility areas (mechanical rooms, storage spaces) where nobody’s walking in bare feet.
Quartz Aggregate
A full quartz broadcast epoxy system is the most slip-resistant option available. The aggregate broadcast at 100% coverage creates a uniformly textured surface that performs well even with standing water. DCOF values of 0.70–0.85 wet are typical for properly applied quartz systems.
This is why commercial kitchens, hospital corridors, and locker rooms use quartz broadcast as the standard — not just for chemical resistance, but for slip resistance.
Wet vs. Dry COF: What Actually Matters
Dry COF is almost irrelevant to slip accidents. Virtually any flooring — including bare polished concrete — has acceptable COF values when dry. The problem is wet conditions: rain tracked in, washing a car, mopping, beverage spills.
That’s why wet DCOF is the number to ask your contractor about. If they can’t tell you the wet DCOF rating of their specified topcoat, ask them to provide the technical data sheet. Reputable coatings manufacturers publish this data.

ADA Compliance for Commercial Floors
The Americans with Disabilities Act doesn’t specify a COF number directly — it references ASTM C1028 and the broader requirement that surfaces be “stable, firm, and slip resistant.” Courts and insurance companies have generally interpreted this as DCOF ≥ 0.42 wet for level surfaces.
For ramps under ADA, the surface must have a COF of at least 0.80 (measured dry). Any epoxy ramp surface needs aggressive anti-slip treatment — typically aluminum oxide at high coverage rates or a full quartz system.
If you’re specifying epoxy for a commercial space, restaurant, or public building, ask for a NFSI-certified product. The National Floor Safety Institute runs a testing program (NFSI B101.3) that certifies flooring surfaces based on verified wet DCOF measurements. NFSI High-Traction certification requires wet DCOF ≥ 0.65.
Cost of Anti-Slip Additives
Anti-slip additives add relatively little to a project’s total cost. The real cost is in the labor to apply them correctly.

For most homeowners, specifying aluminum oxide in the topcoat for an additional $75–$150 is a complete no-brainer. It’s a one-time decision that can’t be changed after the floor cures.
What to Ask Your Contractor
Before any contract is signed, ask these three questions:
“What is the wet DCOF of the topcoat you’re using?” — This should be answered with a number from a technical data sheet, not a vague “it’s slip resistant.”
“Which anti-slip additive are you including, and at what rate?” — If they’re not including any additive on a residential garage floor, ask why not. The cost difference is trivial.
“Is this floor compliant with ANSI A137.1 for wet pedestrian areas?” — For any commercial application, this question filters out contractors who don’t know what they’re talking about.
A contractor who can’t answer any of these questions hasn’t thought seriously about slip safety. That’s a red flag worth heeding.
